It didn't go away. So I started using ______ (insert wildly popular, infomercial brand of acne treatment), but it only dried my skin out and left it tight and peeling. It did help with my acne though, so I stuck with it and started spending more time in the sun and tanning during the winter because I heard UV light was a great way to clear up acne (no need to lecture me about this decision, I already know how stupid it was).
Once I read the report on how carcinogenic tanning beds are, I fled in terror to my dermatologist. She put me on antibiotics (which I detest), and a strong medicinal acne treatment that came with some side effects and basically did the same thing that the infomercial brand did.
These treatments were all just bandaids for a larger problem, so now, at twenty nine, I'm trying something new. Because I STILL have acne.
Want proof?
All the harsh cleansers and toxic toners that I've previously tried do nothing but strip your skin of its natural oils, so your body goes into hyperdrive and overproduces it, resulting in a perfect circle of stupid. In an attempt to break out of the cycle, and cease putting potentially hazardous chemicals into my body, I'm going to attempt the Oil Cleansing Method, or OCM for those hip, acronym loving kids out there.
Ready to freak out? Okay, this is how it works:
YOU PUT OIL ON YOUR FACE!
There are a ton of recipes online, but the one I'm going with is a 70/30 mix of castor oil and grapeseed oil. Castor oil is fantastic at drawing out dirt and bacteria that builds up in your pores as well as having a slew of other beneficial properties. And grapeseed oil is currently being touted as the second coming of Christ (skin wise), so I have neither the time nor the prerogative to list out all of its advantages. Pro-tip, make sure that the oil you buy is cold or expeller pressed to avoid toxic chemicals that are found in other extraction processes. Also, don't eat it.
I plan on adding to this post weekly to document how effective this method is for me, so make sure to stop by again. Oh, and it should be noted that at the same time I'm attempting this, I'm also going vegan, which has been shown to clear up skin as well.
*Unless you have some bizarre oil allergy, in which case, it might kill you.
That's basically my story. Perfect kin through my teens, started breaking out HORRIBLY around my 25th year. The only thing that saved my skin is a super strong salicylic acid peel. I tried OCM, it didn't do much, neither did OTC stuff.
ReplyDeleteI've tried the same thing, and it didn't work for me, only pissed my skin off. I've literally tried EVERYTHING but this, so I'm hoping it works.
ReplyDeleteI've been using Murad for years now - it does work, but it dries out my skin something HORRIBLE. Although, I do like the moisturizer they provide. But yeah, I've been trying to get myself away from it because of the chemicals. I'm really interested in this method, and plan to try it out starting this weekend. Especially considering my main issue (now) is body acne.
ReplyDeleteI've also done the antibiotics, accutane, retin-A, clindamycin....the list goes on and on and on.
I tried Murad too, and it was the same as Proactive as far as results go. It worked, but my skin hated me and never looked healthy thanks to how dry it was. And yup, I've done all of those too. FYI, if you want to scare yourself, check out how bad accutane is for you:

Body acne might be tricky to treat with this method, although using the shower as a steam-cleaner may be the best option. I'd do it last, after the chemicals from your soap and shampoo/conditioner have already been rinsed off of your skin.
Accutane scares the crap out of me - I only did it because I was so desperate (not for facial acne, but for body acne), and my insurance wouldn't consider paying for anything else until I'd tried Accutane. I ended up doing 2 rounds of it and FREAKED out the entire time I was taking it. Not to mention it made me suicidal - which is what finally convinced my doctors that it wasn't a good option for me.
DeleteAnyway, I figure I'll give this a try - probably combined with some other options - and see what happens. The worst it can do is nothing (or make it worse for a slight period of time). *shrugs*
Holy shit. Why the hell would they make you take that FIRST?! Ugh.
DeleteOh, and I found a homemade cucumber-lemon toner that goes really well with this that I'm going to post soon ^_^
Yeah, that was my thought when they said I had to try it first - but it's because it's cheaper than the next options. Stupid insurance companies.
DeleteI LOVE cucumber-lemon combinations!
Oh! Was going to ask - are you going to keep all your updates in this one post, or do new posts and link them together (so I get notified)? LOL
ReplyDeleteIf I'm going to do this at the same time as you - maybe I'll make a companion blog to detail my own efforts....hmm.
I was originally going to post to this one, but now I think it'd be wiser to do new posts and just link to it.
DeleteThis is the first time I've felt thankful for having bad skin in my teens because thankfully I haven't had much of a problem since I hit my 20s. I'll get the occasional large spot & I suffer with blackheads around my nose but other than that my problem is more with dry skin than anything else.
ReplyDeleteI'll be interested to see how you get on with this & if you come up with any good moisturising recipes I'll definitely be up for giving those a try. The toner sounds interesting too.
I've been using grapeseed oil instead of moisturizer and it's been working out really well so far. Granted, it's only been two days, lol.
